Documenting the Rural Midwest

Written by Steve Doherty

Focusing on a theme helps establish connections and purpose in an artist’s work, especially when the range of subjects documents a disappearing aspect of our culture. That’s why Wisconsin artist Bob Beck has been doing a series of plein air paintings of rural Midwestern farms.

Florida artist Morgan Samuel Price and Maine artist Donald Demers are friends who both enjoy plein air painting, yet each has a distinctly different way of analyzing potential subjects, organizing pictorial compositions, and working with oil colors. Here’s a preview of the program they will offer at the Monterey, California, Conference Center in April 2013.

Make sure to register NOW for the Plein Air Convention & Expo so you can watch as master artists offer demonstrations, in some cases with two masters on the stage at the same time. Here are some of the double demonstrations planned for the Monterey convention (www.pleinairconvention.com).

Written by Steve Doherty

As we take time to give thanks for our many blessings, Abigail McBride remembers a grandmother who insisted on planting a tree over her husband's objections. That tree and the grandmother's encouragement are represented in one of McBride's treasured plein air paintings.
