Sacran’s plein air painting of a waterfall at Big Cedar Lodge
Sacran earned a BFA from Tennessee Tech University and took graduate level courses at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and he is now a part-time instructor at the University of Arkansas in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He creates studio portraits and plein air landscape, and he has received awards for his work in competitions organized by the Portrait Society of America, the Wisconsin Plein Air Painters Association, and the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute Invitational.

“Perspective on Youth”
“My work is largely about documenting today,” Sacran writes on his website. “Everything has a history, and history is made now. I am interested in exploring subjects that evoke a mood or feeling introspectively, mostly dealing with forgotten or overlooked aspects of everyday life. Among the subjects that interest me are scenes we pass by every day, people we know well, and objects we often use. In the chaos of daily life, I believe we all take those simple and familiar things for granted, yet they are the very things we may come to miss.”
Sacran recently taught two workshops, one of creating sustained figure studies from life and the other on “Finding Your Way. Working and Thinking in Process.” He will be teaching other painting workshops at Big Cedar Lodge in the near future.
From October 12-15, 2011, Sacran will be participating in the second Paint Out and Workshop at Big Cedar Lodge. The resort is offering special packages to plein air painters who want to join Jason and the nearly 70 artists who will be painting the spectacular fall landscape and submitting their work to be judged by Matt Smith. Smith is teaching two workshop, both of which are already sold out.
