“Out of the Depths,” by John D. Cogan, 2012, acrylic, 52 x 21 in.

John D. Cogan knows more about painting the effects of weather on the landscape than most artists: He earned a Ph.D. in experimental physics before becoming a full-time artist. This was his fourth time participating in the event sponsored by the Grand Canyon Association, the National Park Service organization that raises funds to benefit the Grand Canyon National Park. “I completed 19 acrylic paintings,” he says, “including the quick draw painting and a demonstration piece.” For more information, visit www.johncogan.com.
