Twenty-six lucky artists will be spending late February in Hawaii painting in one of the plein air circuit’s most tempting events. The organizers of the Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational just made it more interesting with a commissioned piece for the area youth orchestra.

The painting event runs Feb. 18-26, and on Feb. 25, a new composition of music by Siuai Laufou will debut with the Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra & Friends. Laufou has arranged and written music for a number of well-known artists, including Israel (Iz) Kamakawiwo’ole. The Maui Arts League, the sponsor of the plein air event, commissioned the piece, and Laufou reports that he wrote it influenced by the youth who will perform it.

John Porter Lasater IV won Collector’s Choice and Artists’ Choice last year at the Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational, and he and Jason Sacran are co-teaching a workshop in conjunction with the 2017 event. He says he’s excited about the event’s expansion into music.

“The arts in a metaphysical sort of way create a safe environment for trying out new things, new creations,” says Lasater. “And the various art disciplines belong together. I am very excited about hearing this. It stirs up something in the spirit!”
