Normally we don’t reproduce photographs taken with sunlight reflecting off the camera lens, but when Sandra Hildreth sent us a photograph of her painting a watercolor on the summit of Azure Mountain in the northern Adirondack Mountains and we thought the distortion actually conveyed the sense of bright sunlight on that day. We decided to go back through our files and find other photographs that proved (with all due respect to Thomas Kinkade) that there isn’t just one “Painter of Light.”

Sergio Lopez during his “bike to paint spot” challenge.

The photograph of Sandra Hildreth was taken by her friend, Duncan Cutter after they hiked up to the painting location. “It was round trip hike of just 2 miles to the summit of this 2512' mountain,” Hildreth explains. “And no, I'm not painting with both hands — just holding a second brush in my left hand and trying to capture the glowing evening light before I needed to hike back down.”

Another photograph taken with the sunlight glaring off the camera lens is of Californian Sergio Lopez who traveled on his bicycle to painting locations. “I motivated myself by setting a goal of biking to a new location every afternoon during one week,” he explains. “I tried to get to locations around 1:00 pm and paint for 60-90 minutes, pack up, and get home by 4:30 pm before it became too dark to safely bike along the busy roads.” Lopez has been posting his daily paintings on Facebook to an ever increasing number of appreciative friends.

Finally, we rediscovered a photograph sent to us by Wisconsin artist Lynn Rix who spent a year painting in the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center in Milwaukee. It shows Rix painting at sunset at the nature center.

This is almost impossible to capture on paper or canvas, I have tried, but I thought Lopez painting actually did almost capture that moment of evening light that changes every second and disappears in minutes. Thanks for the memories.

I Love it... "The painter of light", Mr Kinkaid, isn't really a painter of light, in my not -so-humble opinion.
