After Bruce E. Newman participated in PleinAir magazine’s Publisher’s Invitational in the Adirondack Mountains in June, 2011, he felt a new sense of commitment to outdoor painting and his local community. Because we expect many of the participants in the 1st Annual Plein Air Convention & Expo next April will gain the same sense of focus and dedication, we’re publishing some of Newman’s remarks.

"Most of my work has been done en plein air since 2003, two years after I began painting. I had discovered Richard Schmid and learned that a painting could actually be completed in three hours rather than the thirty or so it had been taking me. In recent years, though not completely aware of it, I’ll admit to “slacking off”. I’ve begun many pieces in the field and finished in the comfort of my studio, for example.

“In follow-up articles about our June Adirondack event, I read the term ‘life-changing’ more than once. Well, it truly was that for me! Driving home through Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, I was able to refocus on all the reasons I love painting from life out in nature. I recommitted to plein air painting, both for enjoyment and for the growth I know it will allow. I saw PleinAir magazine as a champion of plein air painting and I also committed to being a champion in my own region.

“My precise goals were to always be cognizant of the reasons I paint en plein air; to be a champion for plein air painting within my city, my province and my region; and, lastly, to establish a province-wide plein air organization within one year. I’m happy to say that Plein Air Painters of New Brunswick (PAPNB) has been established after only four months and we held our very first paint-out on October 23, 2011. Our small but rapidly growing membership is largely new to painting on location but they are very eager and excited. As we become established in Fredericton, my home, I will do my best to begin groups in other cities across New Brunswick. These will be loosely-formed local groups but maybe I can inspire and motivate under the umbrella of PAPNB." For more information, visit Newman’s website at www.brucenewman.com.

What a pleasant surprise to see this, Bruce. Keep up the good work. "U Pick" looks like the painting you did when we were in Vermont.

Jack, you sound like a bitter old man. I don't profess to be the world's greatest painter and, in fact, that's irrelevant in the context of this article. The point is that I love plein air painting and hope to spread the "gospel". Surely, all aspiring plein air painters can fit under the Plein Air Magazine umbrella, can't they?

How can you put such bad paintings in your online mag. The guy has no clue on how to paint.

Congratulations, Bruce - I'm originally from Nova Scotia, and now a plein air painter living in Maine. I enjoy hearing about artists from the Maritimes - just returned from ten days painting in Brigus, Newfoundland - spectacular!
