In commenting on the top award winners, Gurney said that Minnesota artist Scott Lloyd Anderson created a “superb painting in every respect” when developing New Extended Hours. He went on to say “there is a nice handling of the natural and artificial light, a fine control of detail module, and the artist put just enough well-drawn detail where it was needed. Bravo for choosing a subject that most people would pass by.”

Gurney also said that the second place winner, Red Buildings by Colorado artist Shaun Horne,  “is beautifully observed, particularly in the reflected light, and it goes way beyond what photography could ever capture. There is a confident design sense informing all the small and large forms.” And when commenting on the Third Place winner, A Table Setting by Florida artist John Ball, Gurney said there was a “very tasteful handling of the low window light and the rich darks. There is also good control of focus and highlights, and an unexpected subject with an execution worthy of Sargent.”

Each of these three winners will receive recognition and merchandise provided by competition sponsors. The First Prize winner receives a profile in the weekly PleinAir Today e-newsletter, a $250 gift certificate from SourceTek Plein Air Panels, a $100 gift certificate from Blick Art Supplies, a $120 Gamblin Accents on Landscape Painting System and some Gamblin GamVar Picture Varnish, and $100 worth of Isabey French Handmade Bristle Brushes.

The semi-finalists in the July/August competition include Rajesh Sawant, Scott Lloyd Anderson, Eleinne Basa, William Wray, Frank Strazzulla, Jason Tako, Jim Wodark, Tracey Maras, and Becky Joy. Gurney gave honorable mention awards to Scott Lloyd Anderson, Stewart White, Ron Grauer, Colin Page, and Mamie Walters.

Artist are now entering their paintings in the September/October bimonthly PleinAir Salon competition that will be judged by Jill Carver in November, 2011. All the paintings selected in the bimonthly competitions will become eligible for the $20,000 in cash prizes.

The rules announced in January allow for both studio and plein air paintings, and it would be wrong to change those in the midst of the competition. Here are the rules:

"All painting subjects accepted including studio and plein air works of any subject matter including, but not limited to landscape, architecture, still life, figurative, or portraiture in any size and made with any medium including oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, and others."

By the way, the top winner selected by James Gurney, Scott Lloyd Anderson, is a dedicated outdoor painter who recently won top award in the 9th Annual Grand Marais Art Colony competition in Minnesota, and he has won awards in a number of other important plein air event.

Are these really plein air paintings? I think not! I thought this contest was to award exceptional plein air work, not studio painting. This comment has been made before but I have not seen any reply. PLEASE address this issue. I will not enter any more until it is clarified!!
