Dramatic waterfalls punctuate lush mountain vegetation in this part of the Adirondacks.

Last year’s thoroughly enjoyable Publisher’s Invitational Paint Out, hosted by PleinAir magazine and held in the Adirondack Mountains near Saranac Lake, inspired most of the participants to sign up again for this year’s event. The 2013 Paint Out, which runs June 18 through 23, is sold out. But there’s still a way to get in.

Lake scenes make for pleasant painting.

One new person has already joined the group after a participant had to cancel her reservation. PleinAir Publisher Eric Rhoads is maintaining a waiting list for just such contingencies, and he’s also working to get additional rooms, allowing for more attendees. To get on the waiting list, call 561.655.8778.

The natural beauty of the area is striking from many angles.

It’s difficult to say exactly why people have enjoyed this event for the last two years, because there are several likely reasons. The area in which the Paint Out is situated is beautiful, with lush, green vegetation, rolling hills, serene lakes, rustic buildings, and the whiff of untamed wilderness. The fellow participants are likeminded, serious painters who know how to have a good time and know when to get down to business and paint. And the atmosphere over the entire event is one of unity of purpose and relaxed but focused productivity at the easel.

Participants stay in lodging on the campus of Paul Smith College, and all meals are provided. For more information, visit the event’s website.
