Is it the amazing focus of a plein air painter, or an example of how plein air painting sometimes serves as documentation of an event or a moment? Both.
San Francisco was bustling with painters at the time, many of whom lost their studios and livelihoods in the quake and ensuing fire. Some survived to create anew, including the artist in the photo. A more painterly image is found here:
