Recently, PleinAir Today detailed a vibrant invitational exhibition at Groveland Gallery in Minneapolis that was organized in conjunction with this past weekend’s “Plein Air Smackdown.” Even with scattered showers skirting the area, artists ventured out to paint, eventually enjoying laughs, libations, and sales.

The annual Plein Air Smackdown is Groveland Gallery’s most popular summertime event, and 2017 was perhaps its best year ever. Hosted on Saturday, August 5, the 7th Annual Smackdown featured nearly 20 gallery and guest artists painting at three different locations around Minneapolis from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. After completing a few paintings, the artists were then asked to display their works at Groveland during a party and sale from 4-6 p.m. Despite a slew of afternoon showers, the party was attended by over 100 guests and most artists enjoyed healthy sales, selling as many as two or three paintings.

Paintings from the gallery’s Plein Air Invitational were still on display, with the Smackdown paintings placed on easels around the space. Among the artists represented were Dan Mondloch, Carl Bretzke, Bob Upton, Richard Abraham, Joshua Cunningham, Susan Horn, Stuart Loughridge, and Holly Swift, among others.
