Achieving Precision Outdoors

Texas artist Steve Armes is a classical realist who frequently exhibits with with two other artists, Kirk Richards and Stephen Gjertson, who collectively call themselves The Triad. In the spring print edition of Plein Air, Armes demonstrated his techniques. Since many artists subscribed too late in the year to receive that issue, we decided to re-publish Armes’ demonstration and the studio painting based on that sketch.

Transparent Watercolor Outdoors

If you want to know just how passionate plein air watercolorist can be, you should read the letters we received after failing to feature any watermedia artists in the most recent print edition of Plein Air (we did feature Raleigh Kinney in the digital edition). One artists who complained graciously but firmly was Californian Larry Cannon who showed us just how exciting transparent watercolor can be when used on location.
