Richard Gallego teaches a Saturday painting class that recently met along the steep cliffs of El Matador State Beach in California, where bottlenose dolphins and gray whales can sometimes be sighted. He wore himself out climbing up and down the steep cliffs while demonstrating and advising students, but the scenery made it all worthwhile.

Continuing our series of articles on techniques for painting desert landscapes, we profile California plein air artist Richard Gallego. He briefly explains how he uses gouache, or opaque watercolor, to create small, rapidly executed paintings of the desert. His techniques might be useful when you paint during the 1st Annual PleinAir Convention & Expo from April 12-15, 2012.
