In this series, plein air painter and instructor Jeanne Mackenzie takes a look at new paintings by contemporary artists and points out why they succeed as painted images. This week, Danny Griego’s “Shady Trailer.”

Part of the artist’s eye is finding a subject in the less beautiful. This artist found interesting shapes and color in an old trailer, and even put the trashcans in as a supporting shape. There are a lot of great diagonals that lead you to the bright blue spot (tarp). The neutral colors around it help to show it off. The flicks of warm underpainting add energy to the painting and give it a rough-and-tumble feeling that the subject calls for.
