It was a week filled with work, play, and plein air painting during the 2017 Paint Annapolis in Maryland between June 4-11. Jurors Wil Scott and Richard Sneary had the tough task of determining winners. Who did they favor?

Each year artists from around the country — and globe — gather in Annapolis, Maryland, for a week-long celebration of plein air during “Paint Annapolis.” Held each year in June, “Paint Annapolis” has been hosted for 14 years by the Maryland Federation of Art and has become one of the city’s many great attractions.

In 2017, 30 artists were juried into the competition with Wil Scott and Richard Sneary charged as judges for the event. Scott handled with nocturne scenes while Sneary made the final overall awards decisions. Also on hand this year was Kate Tyrrell, Consular & Cultural Affairs Counsellor for the Embassy of Ireland.

The festival began on June 4 with a “Dueling Brushes” quick draw in which artists painted historic downtown Annapolis. Artists were given three hours to paint, and awards were presented immediately after by juror Hai-Ou Hou. Lon Brauer earned First Place, Elisa Phillips Second Place, and Ken Karlic Third Place. Cynthia Rosen was honored as the People’s Choice winner.

On Tuesday, June 6, artists were invited to “Paint the Bay” at Chesapeake Bay, a new event hosted in conjunction with the Junior League of Annapolis. This event witnessed four award winners: Tony Robinson took home First Place for “Crabfishing, Eastpoint,” Mick Williams earned Second Place for “Chesapeake Run,” Ken Karlic went home with Third Place for “Birds of a Feather,” and Cynthia Rosen was again the People’s Choice for her work “Sails Over Spa Creek.”

Wednesday, June 7, was reserved for nocturnes. Frank Hallinan Flood was the winner in this category for “Main Street Alley Way” while Crista Pisano took Second Place for “Annapolis Nocturne.” Raymond Ewing was honored with Third Place for “After Hours,” and Elisa Phillips received an Honorable Mention for “By the Light of the Moon.”

After all of these events and awards, there was still the overall honors to hand out. Taking the top prize for 2017 was Paul Maloney for his painting “Pipework in Eastport.” Frank Hallinan Flood was honored with Second Place for “Abandoned Project,” and Lon Brauer earned Third Place for “Ice Maker.” “Wool and Lace” by Joanna Barnum earned her the Annapolis Gallery Association Award, and “Before the Rain” by Elise Phillips was awarded the Ardis Diaz Memorial Award for Best Use of Light. The award for Best Painting of the Naval Academy went to Ken Karlic for “Constant Vigil” while Crista Pisano’s “Thomas Point Boathouse” and Neal Hughes’ “Flower Shop” both earned Honorable Mentions.
