I painted this piece during the recent Laguna Beach Invitational event in October. As is the case these days, the in-person event was cancelled, but the LPAPA board courageously pushed forward and hosted the event virtually. And it was awesome. They did an incredible job creating a wonderful experience for artists and collectors that was memorable and one-of-a-kind. I loved being able to participate – even though I wasn’t able to paint on location like I had been looking forward to.

There were 25 participating artists, and we all received photos to paint from that were taken in the Laguna Beach area. We worked from our studios (except for a couple artists who lived near Laguna Beach and painted on location). On the last day of the event, a few of us did demonstrations, and I chose the scene that you see in “Summer ll.

I had been painting the Laguna scenes and loving it — sandy beaches and surfers — but for this demo I turned to my homeland north of Seattle, Washington. This particular scene is from the Skagit Valley looking toward Mt. Baker. I love how the farm fields in this area have such an incredible backdrop with the Cascade Mountains rising up behind them. I’ve lived in the flat parts of this country, too, so I don’t take the mountains for granted and never tire of painting them.

But having been invited back to Laguna Beach next year, I will be happy to leave these beautiful mountains behind for some time on the ocean.
