Stuart Roper: “Morning At The Sheep Barn” is a great example of a plein air painting that is the result of coming upon a subject that has so much going for it that I stop in my tracks. Here, I found the play of colors and light to be perfectly orchestrated by nature, which is not always the case, but such a joy to be so inspired that the painting pretty much paints itself! Working small on location let’s you simplify, work quickly and decisively, going for just the essentials without getting caught up in minutiae. It’s a great way to quickly advance your plein air skills!
After honing my early plein air process, while living in Normandy, Corsica and Provence, France for 6 years, I returned to the US to find a veritable plein air movement in progress. Since my return in 1998, I’ve continued to work primarily en plein air. I frequently work within the confines of a strictly limited palette, often premixing and tubing up a full range of secondary and tertiary colors from one set of primaries. The choice of primaries will shift the “tune” of the painting, but the splendid harmonies, like in music, still flow.
I’m currently a signature member of the American Impressionist Society, associate member in the following; the Oil Painters of America, the International Plein Air Painters and the Outdoor Painters Society, and a former member of the Western North Carolina Plein Air Painters and the Plein Air Painters of the South East. These organizations have given me the opportunity to participate in numerous plein air events and exhibitions. The camaraderie as well as friendships developed has all enriched my life immeasurably. My work has been included in many local and national exhibitions and the recipient of numerous awards and honors, for all of which I’m filled with gratitude.
