“Sunlit Alleyway” was painted during the Outdoor Painters Society’s Plein Air Southwest 2019 paint out and exhibition in Galveston, Texas. This subject instantly and totally caught my eye, stopping me in my tracks. That the architecture, perspective, and light all combined at that very moment is what delights me about plein air painting; that spark of inspiration that calls me into action. You have to remain open to things you didn’t anticipate and grab them when they work. In this piece, it was the arrival of that brilliant red sports car that parked near the end of the alley, a great “eye hook” that never lets you leave the canvas.

This piece was recently exhibited at NYC’s Salmagundi Club during the 2019 American Impressionist Society’s 20th Annual National Juried Exhibition, and then again in March with the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association’s 16th Annual Best of Plein Air 2020 Exhibition.

After honing my early plein air process over a six-year period living in Normandy and Provence, France, I returned to the US to find a veritable plein air movement in progress. Since my return in 1998, I’ve continued to work primarily en plein air. I frequently work within the confines of a strictly limited palette, often premixing and tubing up a full range of secondary and tertiary colors from one set of primaries. The choice of primaries will shift the “tune” of the painting, but the splendid harmonies, like in music, still flow.

I’m currently a signature member of the American Impressionist Society, associate member in the following; the Oil Painters of America, the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, the International Plein Air Painters, and the Outdoor Painters Society as well as a former member of the Western North Carolina Plein Air Painters and the Plein Air Painters of the South East. These organizations have given me the opportunity to participate in numerous plein air events and exhibitions, and along with the camaraderie as well as friendships developed, have all enriched my life immeasurably.

My work has been included in many national exhibitions and has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, for all of which I’m filled with gratitude.
