“Ravine With Cows,” by Barbara L Lawrence, oil, 20 x 24 in.

The first Santa Cruz Art League Statewide Exhibition was held in 1928. This year, the competition and exhibition will maintain the same high standards for acceptance that have made this annual landscape show one of California’s premier art events.

Michael Zakian, who was profiled in the January 2013 issue of PleinAir magazine, will be the juror for this important showcase of landscape paintings. The competition is open to California residents who work in oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, and mixed media. There is an entry fee of $45 for non-members ($35 for members) for up to three entries/jpegs.

Zakian is an art historian, curator, and museum director who has an equal interest in modern art and the realist tradition. He has been the executive director of the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art since 1995. For more information about the competition, visit www.scal.org.

  1. This is the second year I have attended this event. The artists are very willing to share information about technique and materials. It was a great learning experience, and a wonderful day outdoors.
