The California Art Club recently announced “On Location in Malibu 2018,” a plein air exhibition at the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art. The show features artists such as Larry Cannon, Jeremy Lipking (whose work has been featured at FineArtConnoisseur.com), Jennifer Moses, Michael Situ, and many more, including John Cosby, who gives us an inside glimpse into two of his plein air paintings from Malibu.

“While growing up in California I spent all my spare time outdoors, hunting for lizards and snakes and making tree forts in eucalyptus trees,” Cosby says. “The hills above the ocean, as well as the canyons carved by the seasonal rains, have been someplace that feels like home to me. The painting I created here was the perfect blend of my past and present life. Malibu means Hills and Sea.”

“The Pacific Coast Highway is the defining road along the California coast,” Cosby says when talking about “Malibu Moon.”

“I was driving north for a day of painting and to avoid traffic had left home very early. As I came over a hill, I saw the moon going down and pulled over to watch. I realized I had a painting if I was fast.”

John Cosby is known internationally for finding captivating subjects in everyday locations that others might overlook. His keen eye for composition brings his scenes to life, and his use of bold color and energetic brushstrokes have made him one of the most sought-after painters by collectors around the world. In his “Painting Plein Air Impressionism” you’ll learn John’s step-by-step techniques for capturing the essence of the environments he depicts. Preview it below:

“On Location in Malibu 2018,” runs through July 29, 2018. For more information and to preview the rest of the exhibition, please visit www.californiaartclub.org.
