Recently, American Women Artists hosted a Plein Air Paint Out in Nashville, TN, in the heart of Music City, but it couldn’t have felt farther away from the hustle and bustle of the honky tonks on Broadway.

The renowned Cheekwood Estate & Gardens was a perfect location to celebrate nature and enjoy a spring day painting outdoors. Works created that day were eligible for a $2,250 in-kind grand prize generously donated by PleinAir Magazine. Numerous award-winning artists took part, and it was a difficult decision for Award Judge and AWA Master Signature Member Sally Maxwell to make. Marla Luttrell won the PleinAir Magazine package for her beautiful oil of a stately tree on the Cheekwood grounds.
The Paint Out was part of a series of events from April 22-26, 2026, to celebrate the “Of Mark & Meaning: American Women Artists at the Customs House Museum” in Clarksville, TN and the Symposium of Women in the Arts at the Frist Art Museum in Nashville.
