Right now, the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association (LPAPA) is turning Laguna Beach, California, into an outdoor painting studio. Thirty of the top award-winning plein air painters from around the nation are invited to gather and paint the town as they compete for top cash awards and carry on a century-old plein air painting tradition that helped establish Laguna Beach as an Art Colony.
This year’s artists are: Geoff Allen, David R. Becker, Zufar Bikbov, Carl Bretzke, Philip Carlton, Jennifer Diehl, Aimee Erickson, Mark Fehlman, Danny Folkman, Mary Garrish, Kimball Geisler, Scott Hamill, Mike Hernandez, Tim Horn, Kathleen B. Hudson, Debra Huse, Ryan Jensen, Chuck Kovacic, Margaret Larlham, Jason Li, Judd Mercer, Terry Miura, Lisa Mozzini-McDill, Michael Obermeyer, Aaron Schuerr, Frank Serrano, Michael Situ, Haidee-Jo Summers, Kim VanDerHoek, and Mason Williams
“The Laguna Invitational carries on the rich legacy of the early California painters who were drawn to Laguna by its stunning beauty,” says Mark Fehlman. “The coastline is rugged with white sandy beaches and the canyons are filled with towering Eucalyptus trees and colorful sage brush. It is so hard to narrow down what to paint for the four competition paintings. There is beauty everywhere. It is the artist’s dilemma.”
