Registration opened on October 2 for the annual Plein Air Southwest Competition & Show, featuring more than $25,000 in awards. However, the deadline for entry looms. . .

Interested artists have until January 7, 2018 to submit their materials to be considered for the Plein Air Southwest Competition & Show in Rockport, Texas. Hosted May 21-26, the major event offers robust sales and more than $25,000 in awards. The 2018 event will be of special significance for the local community as Rockport was one of the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Harvey, which swept through the Gulf Coast August 17-Sepetember 3, 2017, causing nearly $200 billion in damage. Despite the widespread destruction, Rockport and other hard-hit communities have seen a considerable bounce-back, but for many their lives will never be the same.

Presented by the Outdoor Painters Society, the Plein Air Southwest event has earned a reputation as one of the premier events of spring. The Outdoor Painters Society sponsors the event to showcase the incredible talent within its membership and to promote an appreciation for the process of painting “en plein air.” Most works are completed in a single painting session, painted outdoors on location, and are characterized by the bold use of color, design, and the freshness of paint application.

The 2018 event will mark a new format and paint-out location! Plein Air Southwest has evolved from a salon-style gallery exhibition into a six-day paint-out competition followed by a three-week show and sale of plein air work produced during the official paint-out period of May 21-25, 2018. The host venue for 2018 is Rockport Center for the Arts in Rockport, Texas. This area on the Texas Gulf Coast is rich with subject matter that appeals to all plein air painters!

Acclaimed artist Joshua Been has been selected as the 2018 Juror of Awards.
