In this series, plein air painter and instructor Jeanne Mackenzie takes a look at new paintings by contemporary artists and points out why they succeed as painted images. This week, Fen Rascoe’s “Waiting on a Truck.”

There is a quiet solidness to this baled field, with good information of light source. The sky gives more information of light source by becoming warmer as it gets closer to the sun to the right. Good aerial perspective comes into play as the most detail is on the foreground bales. The distant hay bales become one with the bank of trees.
