The mania that is Modern and Impressionist art week descends on New York next week, when two auctions on November 4 (Bonhams and Sotheby’s) and a third on November 5 (Christie’s) will turn the world’s collecting eye on the Big Apple.

Bonhams’ sale kicks off the week, with its first piece going on offer at 2 p.m. The sale comprises 59 lots, highlighted by sculptures from Auguste Rodin and Henry Moore, as well as paintings by Camille Pissarro and Edgar Degas. Offering works of good quality, Bonhams will present eight artworks estimated to bring over $100,000, but none are expected to surpass $1 million.

By contrast, Sotheby’s and Christie’s sales both feature masterpiece-quality artworks with astronomical estimates. In fact, Sotheby’s Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale boasts eight works that could conceivably reach the $10 million mark. The auction of 74 lots takes place on November 4, beginning at 7 p.m. Sculptural works by Alberto Giacometti and Amedeo Modigliani, garden scenes by Impressionist master Claude Monet, and a rare, 1890 Vincent van Gogh floral still life, estimated at $30 million-$50 million, headline the offerings. Sotheby’s day sale of 322 lots continues the excitement on November 5.

Yet another highly anticipated sale takes place on November 5, when Christie’s will trot out ahistoric portrait of Spring by Edouard Manet and highly valuable works by Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse, Rene Magritte, Joan Miró, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The Manet portrait, estimated at $25 million-$35 million, comes to auction for the first time in the U.S., having graced the private collection of one family since its acquisition in 1909. If it were to achieve its high-end estimate, surpassing $33.2 million, “Le Printemps” would set a new auction record for the artist. Christie’s will follow its 40-lot Evening Sale with the Impressionist & Modern Works on Paper and Impressionist & Modern Day sales on November 7, offering 146 and 198 works, respectively.
