Be inspired by Kelly Kane’s spotlight on the up-and-coming plein air painter Bryce Elischer, who shares his favorite subjects and more.
Art education: I went to Laguna College of Art + Design (LCAD) in Laguna Beach, California, where I received a Bachelor’s degree in fine art with a minor in figurative sculpture. After I graduated, I took many art workshops, but the instructor who really helped me understand and appreciate plein air painting was Michael Obermeyer.
Favorite subjects: What draws me most toward a particular landscape is a strong sense of atmosphere, which is one of the reasons I enjoy painting nocturnes so much.
What I would do for a living if I wasn’t an artist: If I hadn’t pursued a career in painting, I probably would have gotten into carpentry or frame making, since I do a bit of that on the side.
Favorite artists: Charles Rollo Peters [1862–1928] has been hugely inspirational to my work. The sense of mood and feeling he conveyed in his paintings has taught me a lot about approaching nocturnes.
