“As a MidWest plein air painter, I’ve become obsessed with the disappearance of the many farms that once formed the basis of our communities. More and more old farmsteads are meeting the wrecking ball on their way to becoming strip malls or corporate headquarters. I strive to capture them, in all their fallen glory, as a reminder of our not so distant past.”

Whatever she paints, Wagner’s primary focus is always “the light” and how it affects the landscape, seascape or cityscape scene she is trying to capture. Working in pastel and oil, she approaches her paintings as a sculptor would, carving out nuances of light and shadow. Jill is a devoted plein air artist, painting often in Italy and in United States plein air festivals. She has been designated a Master Pastelist in the Pastel Society of America and Master Circle in the International Association of Pastel Societies. Her work has been published in Pastel Journal and Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine, and has appeared on the cover of PleinAir Magazine. She was honored to be on the faculty of the Plein Air Convention in 2016 and 2017.

Jill’s paintings are represented in Michigan by Tvedten Fine Art in Harbor Springs, J. Petter Galleries in Saugatuk and WSG Gallery in Ann Arbor. In Fort Wayne, Indiana, Castle Galleries represents her work.

A life-long Michigander with a BFA from The University of Michigan School of Art, Wagner owned an award-winning design firm before “seeing the light” and becoming a full-time artist. You can see more of Jill’s work at jillwagnerart.com.
