The West

There are many spectacular views in Colorado that can take your breath away, including this landscape outside of Telluride. I had painted at this location, en plein air, during the summer. While I was painting on location, paddle boarders were floating down the river, dogs on the front of the board enjoying the day. That was a tough, but conscious, decision whether to include the people on the river. A large part of plein air painting is deciding which elements to include and which elements of the scene to leave out, all with the goal of creating an interesting painting.

Later that winter in the studio I painted another version of The West using plein air sketches, painting and photographs for reference. Translating a real scene that is in front of you to paper is the best way to learn about your subject. Painting plein air teaches me about values, composition and color that is difficult to imagine without seeing it firsthand and then I can take this learned information with me into the studio.
