Susan Bunce Ritter is an award-winning artist living in both Northwest Ohio and Southwest Florida. Her paintings have won awards in many local and regional exhibitions in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Florida.
Susan describes her paintings as impressionistic in style and strives for an interpretive and loose brushstroke. She credits painting en plein air as speeding her development in painting. By painting on location, she feels that being able to directly observe color is far more helpful than interpreting the light from photos. When she does paint in the studio, she notices that her work is greatly influenced by her plein air experience. Her preference in subject matter is varied and includes older homes and other interesting structures in historic neighborhoods, colorful alleyways, still life, rocky beaches and ocean views. Working mainly in oil, Susan seeks out subjects that display great light and shadows, color, and appealing shapes.
One of the delights of plein air painting is that one never knows where they will end up painting when they start off. Susan states that part of the thrill is in discovering just the perfect scene, with the added bonus of a place to park and shade to set up an easel! All of these requirements were met for her painting Saturday Coffee. The appeal of this scene lies in the sun-drenched complimentary colors of orange and turquoise blue, along with the great light and shadow opportunities. There is the added bonus of historic architecture and of course the theme of coffee! One imagines this couple taking a break from Saturday morning errands and farmers market to enjoy their favorite cup.
Participating in regional plein air competitions is one of Susan’s favorite artistic pastimes. She recently painted in Paint Grand Traverse, won awards in the 2020 Ohio Plein Air Society competition in Columbus, and won a Guild Award in Fort Wayne Indiana Artist Guild’s Kekionga Plein Air Paint out competition. Earlier in the year Susan was honored with awards in the Punta Gorda, Florida, Visual Arts Center plein air competition and show as well as double awards at The Venice Art Center in Venice, Florida. Her plein air work was featured in the Venice Florida Weekly, March 21–27, 2019: Into Light And History: The Art of Susan Bunce Ritter. Additionally, one of her paintings is in the permanent collection of the Fort Wayne Indiana Art Museum.
Susan is a participating member of The Ohio Plein Air Society, Indiana Plein Air Painters Association, The American Impressionist Society, and The Athena Art Society of Toledo, Ohio. In addition, she holds memberships in several art centers and plein air painting groups in Ohio and Florida.
