To achieve free, direct handling, Hsin-Yao Tseng says it’s impor­tant not to be tense.

“A more relaxed approach will lead to freer brushstrokes,” he says. “Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, and try to have fun in the field. Every time you make a mistake, it leads to an improvement in the next painting.”
