In Galveston, Texas, artists were confronted with bad weather for Brushes by the Beach, held November 15-22, but the painters were not deterred. Who took home the top prize?

Liz Bonham was chosen by juror William Kalwick for Best in Show for her piece “Mosquito Fleet.” Arthur Deatley won Second Place for “Broadway Cemetery,” and Janet Bishop took Third for “Home Mooring.” Elaine Monnig won Honorable Mention for “Elizabeth’s Porch.”

The non-profit group Artist Boat benefited from the sales at the event. The group takes children on kayaks packed with watercolor kits into Galveston Bay to paint plein air.

Miserable weather did not slow down the artists,” reports Brenda Lee, of G. Lee Gallery, the organizer of the event. “More than 50 very respectable paintings were submitted to the contest.”
