Ever heard of Amana, Iowa? There are few places like it, and if you move quickly, you can participate in a plein air event there starting this Friday.

The Amana Colonies are an interesting part of American history. In East-Central Iowa, in the mid-1800s, a religious group from Germany formed a communal society that is now known as the Amana Colonies. The architecture and striking landscape of the region are, not surprisingly, catnip for plein air artists. Catiri’s Art Oasis, a gallery and art hub in Amana, has sponsored the Fresh Paint competition there for many years.

More than $5,000 in prizes are awarded, and there’s a Quick Draw competition on September 4. So get to Amana, Iowa, by 7 a.m. Friday.
