Art Basel is famous and notorious among representational painters. But one thing is for sure: Attending it can be laborious. The antidote, of course, is plein air painting.

Morgan Samuel Price took a break after the festivities in Miami Beach to do some painting at a historic property in nearby Homestead, Florida. PleinAir’s own Violeta de la Serna arranged for her and Price to paint at the Walton House, a private residence populated with, among other creatures, flamingoes, monkeys, parrots, and koi. “It was rainy, cold (at 72F, that’s cold for Florida girls), and dark that day,” reports De la Serna. “But Morgan was determined to get a painting in because private access to this property is rare.”
