Even if you are painting with the immediate medium of a digital painting application, you can still be bedeviled by the changing conditions of plein air.

“I was using my iPad from the balcony of our hotel,” recalls Leslie Ackhurin. “The picture took longer than usual — a few hours — as I was rather mesmerized by the variety of colors in the water, which kept changing as I tried to keep up.”

Akchurin reports that she used the Paper 53 app on her device. Even though she was under cover, the bright Florida sun was an issue. “I’ve applied a non-glare film to my screen, but that just barely allows me to work in shade,” she says. “Full sun and rain are major impediments to digital drawing and painting.”
