Suzi Long captured history, and a plein air painter again took the role of journalist — this time recording a wildfire.

The California artist painted a pastel of the Rough fire as it ran through Kings Canyon National Park in August. The fire would eventually destroy the lodge there.
“It was so awesome, literally, to be able to capture nature in action,” says Long.
