Californian Donna Vis spent 17 hours over several days painting a triptych in Yosemite National Park. The pastel painting, measuring 9 x 36 inches overall, is on view at the Ojai Art Center’s exhibition of work by members of the Pastel Society of the Gold Coast.

“We camped in the Tuolumne Meadows campground, and I spent each day painting in Yosemite,” Donna Vis explains. “I attracted a crowd of onlookers, and some people came back each day to see how the painting was developing. Some asked questions about the pastels because the medium was unfamiliar to them, so I put a sign behind me to answer what became the most frequently asked questions. I didn’t want to be rude to people who are interested, and I was delighted to be able to increase awareness of pastel painting. However, I must say that the interruptions became somewhat difficult to deal with because I was trying to cover a really large surface.” The exhibition at the Ojai Art Center in Ojai, California, will be on view until November 29, 2012.
