Minnesota artist and Plein Air Hudson 2019 judge Lisa Stauffer shares her comments on the winners:
Best In Show, Bob Upton, “Good Afternoon, Hudson” (above)
“This piece captured that late light of the day when things and edges start to blend together in the haze,” she said. “It shows a wonderful variation of colors in value planes, which themselves are losing the contrast of sunny daylight. It is an all-around masterful painting on a very good day indeed!”
Second Place Award, Dan Wiemer, “Beached”
“This piece has great movement, a dynamic composition, and dappled light and depicts a day we all want to be drawn down to the river!”
Third Place Award, Jim Turner, “Quiet Harbor”
“This is an active, busy composition, dashing brushstrokes. It feels playful to me, almost like a day at the fair or the circus. I can feel the boats moving on the river as these folks prepared to go out on the water today.”
People’s Choice Award: Bob Upton, “Good Afternoon, Hudson”
