Plein Air Hudson 2019
Bob Upton, Best In Show and People’s Choice winner, and Lisa Stauffer, judge.

These artists also got some help from local well-known goats, called “the Munch Bunch” to open up a great vista.

Seasons on St. Croix Gallery recently hosted the annual invitational Plein Air Hudson. A perfect weekend of warm sunshine delighted the artists along the river in Hudson, Wisconsin.

(caption: “The view from the overlook where I painted is normally completely blocked with brush during the summer, which obscures the scenic river town of Hudson below. But the city had brought up a herd of hungry goats called “the Munch Bunch” to clear out the invasive species of brush. It gave a spectacular view of the city that you never get to see. Yay goats!”)

Awards

People’s Choice Award: Bob Upton for “Good Afternoon, Hudson”

Minnesota artist and Plein Air Hudson 2019 judge Lisa Stauffer shares her comments on the winners:

Best In Show, Bob Upton, “Good Afternoon, Hudson” (above)
“This piece captured that late light of the day when things and edges start to blend together in the haze,” she said. “It shows a wonderful variation of colors in value planes, which themselves are losing the contrast of sunny daylight. It is an all-around masterful painting on a very good day indeed!”

Second Place Award, Dan Wiemer, “Beached”

Second Place Award, Dan Wiemer, “Beached”
“This piece has great movement, a dynamic composition, and dappled light and depicts a day we all want to be drawn down to the river!”

Third Place Award, Jim Turner, “Quiet Harbor”

Third Place Award, Jim Turner, “Quiet Harbor”
“This is an active, busy composition, dashing brushstrokes. It feels playful to me, almost like a day at the fair or the circus. I can feel the boats moving on the river as these folks prepared to go out on the water today.”

People’s Choice Award: Bob Upton, “Good Afternoon, Hudson”
