Paintings of Los Angeles On View: “Downtown Impressions: Plein Air Perspectives on Los Angeles”
Venue: The Ebell of Los Angeles
Dates: February 6 to March 16, 2025
“Downtown Impressions: Plein Air Perspectives on Los Angeles” pays tribute to Downtown Los Angeles and its revitalization as a hub for commerce and culture. The concept for this show originated more than five years ago, when California Art Club artists began setting up their easels on streets and rooftops to document everyday life in the surrounding cityscape.
The display celebrates the dynamic energy and rich history of Downtown Los Angeles and its surrounding environs, as seen through the eyes of the participating artists – Peter Adams, John Kosta, Simon Lok, Michael Obermeyer and Nancy Popenoe.
“The California Art Club was founded more than a century ago by early plein air artists, who inspired the California Impressionism movement with their stunning landscape paintings awash with fleeting moments of natural lighting,” said Adams, who is President Emeritus of the organization.
“The artists participating in this exhibition at The Ebell employed plein air methods to memorialize the spirit of one of the nation’s most iconic urban settings with artwork that highlights the interplay of architecture, light, and human activity,” added Adams.
