Mountain Maryland Plein Air, sponsored by the Allegany Arts Council, recently awarded its prizes in Cumberland, Maryland. And the winners are…. 

The event, which is in its seventh year, is notable for having two paint-outs, a Quick Draw, and an overall competition. Mountain Maryland also breaks down each of those into “community” (open) and “juried” categories. This year, 30 artists were juried into the competition, and Stewart White served as judge.


The Quick Draw event drew an impressive crowd.

In the overall Plein Air Exhibition, Ron Boehmer won Best of Show for “Holding the Line.” Mick Andrews won First Place for “Swallow Falls,” Beth Bathe took Second with “Double Truss Bridge,” and Third Place went to Nikolay Mikushkin for “Arnson’s Cabin.”


Lon Brauer won the PleinAir Magazine award and First Place in the Friendsville Paint the Town portion of the event.

Best Nocturnal Scene went to Jason Sacran for “Night Shift.” Best Use of Light was won by Susan Lynn for “River Rocks.” Michael Compton won Best Architectural for “Row Houses,” Mick Andrews won Artists’ Choice for “Swallow Falls,” and the Featured PleinAir Magazine award went to Lon Brauer.

In the Cumberland Quick Draw, Allison Menke won the top spot in the Community division, with Nikolay Mikushkin winning First Place in the Juried division. The Student division was won by Isabella Gambetta.

In the Frostburg Paint Out, First Place in the Juried division went to JoEllen Murphy and First Place in the Community division was won by Milton Christianson. 

In the Friendsville Paint the Town portion of the event, Lon Brauer won First Place in the Juried division and Jill Baldinger won First Place in the Community division.
