Through the month of August, Kim Lordier will exhibit a new collection of landscape paintings in a solo show at James J. Rieser Fine Art with a reception on August 4, 2018. The foundation of the new collection comes from the artist’s explorations of Yosemite Valley, the Monterey coastline and estuaries, and Crystal Springs Reservoir in San Mateo, CA. Lordier, nationally known for using dramatic light and rich color in her paintings, brings a subtle shift in style and mood to this new body of work.
The title of the show, “Visual Poetry,” is defined in Lordier’s words as “all senses captivated by rich color and sensitive textures, edited by an artist’s tastes and expressive marks.”
After all these years why I happen to think of Uraina tonight and looked her up on the web.
I was saddened by her passing. I met her in the ’90’s when I first started painting plein air. My aunt in Connecticut liked pastels so we took a workshop in Maine one year with Uraina. I was so taken by the medium I started doing only pastels.
I lived in California, but would visit my aunt in Connecticut and when I did we made sure to find one of Uraina’s workshops.
Well over the years I switched to oils and went to art school for a degree and have been using oils all the time, but I still have some of her workshop pastels. It is a wonderful medium and tonight I thought I would write a note to her, but was saddened by her passing.
I will always remember her and her very lively classes and encouraging teaching.
