How did you develop your unique style?
Cecy Turner: Concerning style, years ago I used to worry that I didn’t have a “style.” I have heard that a lot of artists are concerned about this at the beginning of their career. I’ve discovered that a person’s painting style just evolves like handwriting does. It’s “you” and when it evolves (by doing a lot of paintings) there’s no stopping it. Now I’m happy when people say to me, “I’d know your work anywhere,” instead of saying to myself, “Oh, no! I wonder if that’s good or bad?” Now I know it’s good, because I am me and no one else is. So don’t rush it and it will happen and you’ll eventually be you.
How do you describe success?
Cecy Turner: An artist’s success is usually measured by doing beautiful paintings and winning lots of awards. However, sometimes an artist may learn what has been working in the past and keeps repeating it, changing just a few things here and there. I believe that success is not playing it safe and avoiding challenges because something has been working just fine. “I’ve arrived, and I don’t need to be bothered by challenges anymore.” Rather, I believe that success is seeking out challenges to grow and being willing to fail. Success is having a goal of expanding, learning and growing past your present limits.
