What is the best thing about being an artist?
Kathleen Gray Farthing: Where do I even start? Being an artist has given me so many gifts. And joy! Oh yes, there are challenges: financial, technical, learning curves, spammers, sales that don’t happen, and those canvases that turn into “scrapers.” But what joy there is in watching the scenery go by during a drive and picturing each view as a painting. There’s a thrill that comes with setting up a blank canvas and imagining the painting to come. It’s so exciting when a person loves your artwork enough to invest in it.
I feel so much gratitude that I was able to make a living doing something I loved, while being home as my children grew. More recently, being an artist has given me the opportunity to explore so many unique and beautiful areas of our country, and other parts of the world. Just this April, how joyful it was to be a part of Americans in Paris/Workshops in France with Quang Ho, Adrienne Stein, CW Mundy and Vanessa Rothe, meeting and studying with 20 other artists. In June, I will explore the northwest coast of Michigan for the first time as I paint for Grand Traverse Plein Air. Later, I will be finding inspiring scenes to capture in Ohio, Maryland, the Adirondacks and Hawaii. How lucky I am to be an artist!
