North Carolina artist Jon Houglum is the featured artist at Geary Gallery in Darien, Connecticut, through the end of July.

“I’ve been with them for three years, and now with this show they are focusing on my plein air work,” says Houglum. “I have been teaching individuals and small groups for more than 40 years, and I always tell my students, ‘Nature is by far a painter’s best teacher. Get out there and draw and paint — you’ll learn.'”

“Early Fall,” by Jon Houglum, oil on board, 16 x 20 in.

Houglum, who teaches plein air workshops in the land around his studio in western North Carolina, still loves to go outside and paint whenever possible. “It just is motivating to get out there,” he asserts. “A day out on location is absolutely stimulating. It’s thrilling to try to capture the vibrancy that’s there in paint and brushstrokes.”
