There have for many years been two sides to John Slivjak: fine artist and art teacher. John taught in the Philadelphia and Upper Merion public schools. He now devotes all his efforts to studio and plein air painting and continuing to participate in many national plein air events, as both juror and juried or invited artist.

His first plein air competitive event was Wayne Plein Air 2008. In 2017 he received awards at Hudson Valley Plein Air, Long Beach Island, Castine Plein Air and Mountain Maryland. Most recently he participated in Hudson Valley Plein Air.

John’s work includes landscape, figure, portrait, and still life paintings.

His interest in working from life was influenced by a workshop taken at Studio Incamminati in Philadelphia. While attending the workshop, John met Nelson Shanks, whose expertise in portraiture and painting philosophy remain a lasting influence on John and his work.

John is a member of the Mid Atlantic Plein Air Association (MAPAA) and the Outdoor Painters’ Society. His art has been featured in international art publications including PleinAir Magazine, and his work is held in numerous private collections.

After earning a BFA from The Philadelphia College of Art, John attended graduate school at Indiana University, completing a MFA.
