About the Artist:

Boats in Port was painted in Otranto, Italy, while my wife, Anne, and I were on a month long trip to the Puglia region of Southern Italy. This area was suggested to us by my friend and fellow artist Lori Putnam. Otranto is on the Adriatic side of Italy and the coast is dotted with old villages that are organized around historic walled area and small fishing ports. We were intrigued by the old fishermen and their boats, that animated the waterfront. Otranto has a wonderful restored and enhanced waterfront with a long promenade lined with outdoor cafes.

My goal was to capture the variety of colors and shapes of the boats, against the backdrop of the creamy stone of the walled city and the azure blue water. Anne and I drew a crowd each time that we set up our easels. It became a great way to make friends with the locals and occasional tourist. We stayed in a number of towns for five to six days at a time, to get to know each place on a more intimate level. We took mostly 9” x 12” canvas boards from Raymar and an EdgePro Sketchbook easel for ease of transport. I focused on creating numerous “sketches” rather than finished paintings. This allowed me to paint three or four paintings in a morning.”
