Each year, six friends gather in New Mexico for an artist retreat, and this year they turned to Sargent — the Edward Sargent Wilderness Area, 20,000 acres of wild country northwest of Chama.

“In the past, we’ve painted at Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, New Mexico, but this year we met in Chama for a few days of plein air painting and camaraderie along with artistic discussions,” explains artist Lee McVey. “As the weather gods would have it, it rained for much of the time. Although we’re not extreme plein air painters, we were able to paint during fortunate breaks in the clouds, and under canopies and umbrellas when it drizzled.”
