Landscape Highlights from Watercolor Live 2023

The 3rd Annual Watercolor Live came to an end Saturday, January 28, wrapping up with even more of today’s best watercolor artists sharing all of their secrets, explaining their materials, methods, and more.

The next Live event is March 9-11, 2023, with Plein Air Live. Join us then to be with fellow painters online for days of demonstrations, Q&A with your favorite artists, mingling during the breakout rooms and cocktail hours, and the incredible faculty painting auction.

Watercolor Live - Joyce Hicks
From the session with Joyce Hicks

Starting on Beginner’s Day, Joyce Hicks taught us how to use the power of color to transform a gray, cloudy day into a bright, sunny scene with considerations of color temperature and value.

Sarah Yeoman said she’s fortunate to live in southeastern Pennsylvania, or “Andrew Wyeth” country. For her demo, she painted a landscape scene of a river to show you how you can “sneak up” on a painting by truly creating it step by step, one section at a time.

Artist Thomas Schaller kicked off Day 1 of Watercolor Live on Thursday, January 26 with a live on-screen demo that included a conversational Q&A with Kelly Kane. Schaller shared not only his painting techniques but also generous words of wisdom about being an artist and learning to paint in general.

“I very much enjoyed watching Thomas paint, I love how every artist paints so differently and it all works, watercolour is so very versatile. I am impressed with how different all the demos have been so far. Congratulations Watercolor Live!” ~ Hazel S.

“You don’t have to let reality get in the way of a great painting.” Iain Stewart gave us a live on-camera demo on painting a scene, with a focus on how to “suggest” and “indicate” your scene without “explaining” it in too much detail. He said he uses his reference photo, study, and sketches as his guides while he paints.

Vladislav Yeliseyev presented to us live from his studio in Florida, energetically (and entertainingly) painting a scene from a trip to the Czech Republic.

“The energy of the room has become so wonderfully cheerful. We CANNOT NOT absorb some learning while enjoying the process!” ~Sylvia L.
