Chicago painter Nancie King Mertz served as judge at the Carmel on Canvas Plein Air Paint Out, held recently in Carmel, Indiana. Her top choice was a painting by Troy Kilgore.

It was the first year for the event, which awarded more than $5,000 in prizes. With 64 artists participating and activities for children meeting with great success, the organizers are already talking about next year’s edition.
