Barely into December, the country is already familiar with the sight of snow. The good news is that lovely depictions of snow will be forthcoming. Thomas Wezwick executed a good one recently that garnered a lot of praise online, and, in a rarity for most artists, the painter liked the piece, too.

When asked how he managed the complex winter scene, Wezwick at first cracked wise. “You just put the right colors, at the right values, in the right spots — hey, how hard could that be?” he wrote. But after a few more people commented on the piece, he came clean. “You know, after many, many years of painting, and hundreds of yards of canvas, thinking I will never get this painting thing down, it’s finally getting to be fun,” says Wezwick. “It surely has been the love of painting that has kept me at it.”
