The Hockaday Museum will host a new format for its 13th annual Plein Air Glacier: Paint Out, with a paint-from-home option, an extended exhibition, and an online auction.

Plein Air Glacier: New Format for 2020

From the organizers:

Plein Air Glacier: Paint Out is a timeless tradition of painting in America’s National Parks. Artists traditionally travel to Northwest Montana to paint outdoors in the fresh air of Glacier National Park and nearby Swan and Flathead Valleys for this destination event. Due to COVID-19, this year’s Plein Air Glacier 2020, with a paint out June 12-22, includes an option for out-of-state or immune compromised artists to participate remotely by painting in their own backyards and submitting their work digitally. All works created will be available for purchase during a special online art auction event Saturday, June 27. Artwork can be previewed beginning June 23 here.

The public reception is canceled, but there will be a free, online Facebook Live kick-off event with HMA staff and several artists on June 27. There will also be a an extended exhibition of artworks from June 27 through July 11, 2020, viewable during the museum’s regular business hours.

These all-new paintings range in size and medium from watercolor to oils. For the online auction, works are offered at a minimum bid or a “buy it now” price. Any works left unsold will still be available for purchase online at a fixed price through July 11, 2020. Proceeds from this fundraiser benefit the museum’s educational programs and exhibitions and the museum’s mission to enrich the cultural life of the Flathead community and preserve the artistic legacy of Montana and Glacier National Park, as well as help support artists, many of them severely impacted by pandemic closures and cancellations.

Plein Air Glacier: Paint Out attracts top artistic talent from across the country. Painting outdoors is a centuries-old tradition for adventurous souls who brave encounters with Montana’s rugged natural landscapes, wildlife, and unpredictable changing weather conditions in exchange for the opportunity and challenge to paint from real life. Plein Air Glacier 2020 features 52 participating artists including local artists: Rob Akey, Vernon Anderson, Richie Carter, Jack Dykstra, Bonnie Griffith, Gail Hanson, Linda Hendrickson, Jeff Manion, David Mihalic, Wanda Mumm, Nick Oberling, Karl Oehrtman, Ginnie Ogle, Mark Ogle, Ron Ukrainetz, Sally Vannoy, Kenneth Yarus, and others.
