In this series, plein air painter and instructor Jeanne Mackenzie takes a look at new paintings by contemporary artists and points out why they succeed as painted images. This week, Brad Holts “Bluffs Below the Turnoff to Main Canyon.” 

It is an art to take a scene that you would normally drive right by and envision a painting with a solid composition and interesting play of light. There is a nice foreground lead-in that carries you back to the vertical face. I like the rock textures that enhance, not overpower, the cliff wall. There are agreeable, subtle color and temperature changes in the sunlit wall.
